  • WELCOME!

I am so happy that you are here. Grab a cup of coffee and stay awhile.

This is a space where I share snippets of my life and a look inside our little world. I am a mother to William, Ava, and Clay. Wife to Wes. And dog mom to Ginnie, our 1 year old pound puppy. We are a military family, and are currently living in Alexandria, Virginia.

I am a long time photographer, and instead of shooting people, most of my subjects now come from the grocery store. I am the writer of Baked Bree, my food blog. I am also a co-editor of The Creative Mama and teaching online photography courses at The Creative E-Courses.

five people twelve times – august 2011

We are finally starting to find our groove.  The kids are back in school, and have been for almost a month already.  They love their new school, new teachers, and new friends.  I do too.  The school here is beyond what I expected, and I am really and truly impressed with it.  They are happy, and come home from school happy, which is all that I could ever hope for.  Clay loves his new school too.  He is doing well, and getting used to being a big kid.

I am feeling so much better.  It is amazing how meeting one good friend can change your outlook.  I really do like Kansas, it is beautiful here, and I like the pace.  Admittedly, I miss having a Target (or even a grocery store) right down the street, but I can live with that.  The weather has cooled finally, and it is beginning to show signs of fall.  We went apple picking yesterday and it was the most gorgeous day.  The apple pickings were slim, I guess this years apple crop has been affected by weather and hail, but I still got enough to make an apple crisp.  I love apple picking more than anything, I have a feeling that we will be exploring all of the orchards around here.

We finally sold our house.  I loved that house.  I am sad that it is longer ours, but thrilled that a nice family is going to live in it.  I am also glad that the strain of having two residences is coming to an end.  The whole process of selling our house took a year, and I will not lie, it was stressful.  It feels freeing to be done with it.

This picture was taken over the weekend at the Kansas City Zoo.  We had a great time there, and it is one of the nicer zoos that I have ever been to.  Getting a picture of all of us every month is no easy task.  Here are a few outtakes to show you what I mean.

P.S.  My keeper image was edited using RadLab.  I was one of the lucky beta testers, and have been playing with it for a few months.  It is one of the coolest products around.

back to school. take 2.

Clay went to school on Thursday.  I cannot even tell you how excited he was to finally go.  He watched his brother and sister go to school, and was very sad to not spend the day with them.  He did not make the last few weeks easy on me, he wanted me to entertain him while he was the only one at home.  The one thing that was really good about him being home with me without distraction, was that he finally conquered the potty.  After 7.5 years of buying diapers, I can finally say that we no longer have any diaper wearers in our house.  Woo-hoo!  He is getting so big.

We stopped by the bagel store on the way to get his teacher a dozen bagels.  She mentioned that she loved them, and well, we wanted to butter her up a bit.  But there was no need.  He had an awesome first day.  He sat in the circle, played nicely with the other children, ate all of his lunch, used the potty without incident, and came home with some new paintings for the fridge.  All in all, he could not have had a better day.

We had round 2 of the back to school dinner.  He got his own little cake.  “I wuv this baby cake.”  He makes me laugh.

sarah dobbins - Bree, I’m so jealous about no more diapers. I might actually throw myself a party when I reach that milestone! Congrats to your sweet little family on a successful return to school! By the way, you really inspire me to take more photos of my family. I’ve gotten out of the habit, and you are so helpful at reminding me to get back in the habit!

back to school dinner.

Back to School dinner at our house is a big deal.  We celebrate going back to school.  Will’s favorite dinner, real napkins, and a cake.  We blow out candles and wish for a year of learning, new books, imagination, and good times.  I remember my mom making a big deal out of back to school dinner, and the tradition continues at my house.  I think that it makes the new school year even more special.  Looking back, my mom did such a good job of making small occasions big ones.  The fancy dinners, and all of the details that she included.  I don’t think that I have ever thanked her for that, but I need to.  Thank you mom.  You made so many amazing memories for us growing up.  We probably did not tell you then, so I am telling you now, we appreciated and loved all of them.  And because of that, you made me the mother that I am, doing the same things for my children.  I love you, thank you for teaching me.Something must have been very funny.  I just want to eat her sometimes.  She is so cute and giggly.Don’t judge because I bought a cake.  However, you can judge the girl at the bakery at Wal-Mart.  Really?  1rst? Make a wish for a wonderful new school year. That’s my girl.  Eat a piece of cake just like her momma. :)

alison - Love it. Also really loving the yellow table and greenish chairs. Perfectly cheerful colors for a kitchen.

Lisa - Wow Bree! Thank you so much for this post. Your family is so grounded and loving. It inspires me to try and create the same type of environment when our little one is born next year. I love that you are making small occasions big ones. I am definitely stealing that thought concept as well as this back to school dinner idea. I am making a journal of ideas for when the baby gets older, so please keep the ideas coming.

Erin Ledford - For the back to school dinner, do you just do it sometime the first week of school? I may start that tradition too when it is time…super cool!

Jen - Haha you could send the cake pic to the cakewrecks blog, they love stuff like that. =)

Anne - What a great idea Bree! And thank you for reminding me to thank my mom for making her five children very happy, well-rounded, people. She too gave us traditions and so much love that we have plenty for our families and our children. She commented to me last week that I remind her of herself when she hears what I am doing with Molly. I took that as a great compliment. Now, what am I going to fix for dinner and dessert?
Take care,
Anne

Paul Winter - I randomly came to your blog and I would give you an advice:
If you take real dinner napkins, why don’t you put it on your lap? thats what it is for!!! napkin-lap. Teach your kids good table manners, especially if you celebrate the event with a “fancy dinner”

Nice!!!

k and 2.

My sweet baby girl went to kindergarten this morning.  I did not think that I would cry.  I was wrong.  I did not think that I would be so emotional about it.  Wrong, again.  Her daddy did not think that he would cry or be so emotional either.  We were both wrong.  As much as I love that she loves school, and was so excited to go to big girl school, part of me is going to miss her.  I loved our afternoons together.  When Clay was a baby, we would put him down for a nap, and we would snuggle and read books or watch Glee, or bake a treat.  Color.  Our afternoons were ours.  The boys doing their own thing and the two of us just hanging out.  Once they hit kindergarten, there is no going back.  They are officially students, and school is a big priority.  It is not like preschool, kindy is serious business.  And from now on, they spend more time at school with their teacher then they do with us.  Scary thought isn’t it?

She loved her first day.  Yesterday, we got to meet her teacher and see her classroom.  We went on a little classroom scavenger hunt, putting her supplies away as we went around the stations.  Her little chair with her notebooks tucked into the back, and her “Brain Break Mat”, her cubby.  Her classroom is super fancy, it has a smartboard, and she needed to move her name to the correct spot on the graph.  It about did me in.  Her teacher appears to be wonderful, and Ava likes her a lot.  For the first two weeks, she goes in the afternoons to transition them to a full day.  They have a long school day, 7:55 – 3:20, so they ease them into it.  We ate lunch, got ready, and walked to school.  She got in line, and the teacher told the kids to blow us a kiss and wave goodbye.  Rip off the band-aid.  Ava literally skipped to the classroom, I stood there with the other mommas who had tears streaming down their faces.  Clay and I walked home, and his teacher came over for a visit.  She left, and Clay and I read some books, watched some Food Network, and picked up where Ava and I left off.  I wonder if he likes to watch Glee too?

This series kills me for two reasons.  One, my child now looks like he belongs in Econ 101, not 2nd grade.  Two, my photography skills are always questionable for first day pictures.  I think that it is because, as prepared as we are, there is always some amount of rushing on the first day.  Always hectic.  And, on days like these, I am not wearing my photographer hat, but my mom hat.  Who cares if there are hot spots and some are slightly out of focus?  All I want is to document this big day.

William had a fabulous first day of school, and absolutely nothing could have made me happier than when he came rushing into the house this afternoon (did I mention that they walk home.  BY THEMSELVES??) and said that school was great and that he loved it.  William is very bright, and a great student, but he is not exactly an enthusiastic student. I am not sure if that is exactly the right term for what his attitude towards school is, but it is the best that I can give you right now.  His teacher last year was perfect for him, it was really hard to leave the amazing school that we were at, and he was in his element.  There was a certain amount of apprehension for all of us about him going to a new school.  He was concerned about having a hard time making new friends, getting lost, the usual first day stuff.  The good thing this year, is about 80% of the kids are in the same exact boat as him.  All new, all staying for one year, and they are all military kids.  Military kids are truly amazing.  They are flexible in ways that I wish that I could be.  They can just walk up to  a kid, tell them that they have a nice bike, and then they ride off together, new friends.  If only adults could be that friendly.

Doesn’t he just look positively old?  The walk to school.  Same as in California, we can see our school from our backyard.  We are super lucky.  Clay was a little confused about who exactly was going to school this morning.Waiting to line up.  Clay is the only one that seems to not be annoyed with my picture taking at this point. My girl is ready. Wearing her pin that her teacher gave her. My kids are big enough that they go to school where you can ride your bike.  Oh my.This is Ava’s buddy.  He thought that he was getting his cast off this morning, only to get a new, camo one.  Only on an Army base, that is for sure. :)And she is off.  She didn’t even turn around to wave.  I have more to share with you, but I promised that I would not stay up too late.  These early mornings are not for the weak.  I should have done drills for a few days beforehand.  I was exhausted by 2 this afternoon. Out of practice.

Anne - HI Bree,

Summer is truly over isn’t it? We have the 10 day count down for the big third grade send off! I love your photos and your thoughts. The days are different. As I baked cookies for the kids at work today, I couldn’t help but wish that Clay could have one or two or three for himself. Tell all the kids hello and give Clay a very big hug for me.
